CORRECTION: On June 19, 2014, SAR issued a report based on credible news reports that Professor Ilham Tohti had been detained incommunicado and tried and sentenced in secret, in connection with charges of separatism or inciting separatism (see sources below). Following initial publication of this report, Professor Tohti’s lawyer confirmed that no secret trial had taken place, and that the case had been transferred to the public prosecutor’s office in Urumqi, the capital of Xinjiang province. Until his trial in September 2014, Professor Tohti remained without access to legal counsel or his family.
SAR included the above information in the form of an “update,” but has since removed this report from our Academic Freedom Monitoring Project Index and moved it to our corrections archive.
