Advocacy Intern (Summer 2020)

Scholars at Risk (SAR) seeks a dedicated, detail-oriented intern with excellent writing and research skills to join SAR’s Advocacy team for Summer 2020. This intern may be based in SAR’s New York City office or based remotely. This position reports to SAR’s Senior Advocacy Officers. Internships are unpaid.


  • Researching allegations of attacks on higher education communities, and drafting reports on verified attacks for SAR’s Academic Freedom Monitoring Project
  • Monitoring cases of imprisoned scholars, and writing case updates for staff and our network
  • Drafting letters of appeal on behalf of imprisoned scholars or higher education communities under attack, and – with Advocacy staff – sending out action alerts to our network
  • Drafting social media relating to imprisoned scholars and attacks on higher education communities
  • Support the rollout of SAR’s annual Free to Think report
  • Working with Advocacy staff to update content on SAR’s website
  • Additional tasks, as needed


  • Exceptional writing skills
  • Experience with detailed, investigative research
  • Strong attention to detail, and strong organizational and multi-tasking abilities
  • Experience with social media highly desirable
  • Demonstrated commitment to human rights and/or international education
  • Preferable: students with coursework and/or experience in journalism, human rights, education, international studies, or law
