China: SAR files submission to the UN Universal Periodic Review
Posted July 20, 2023
On July 18, 2023, SAR submitted a report on China to the United Nations Universal Periodic Review (UPR). The report, prepared with assistance from the Academic Freedom Legal Clinic of the Human Rights Centre of Ghent University, focuses on China’s compliance with its obligations under international law to respect, protect, and fulfill academic freedom and related rights within its territory and territories under its control, including the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, and Tibet.
The report analyzes significant violations of academic freedom and university autonomy by the Chinese government, such as imposing party ideology on the academic community and suppressing the exchange of critical thought and ideas. SAR gratefully acknowledges the substantial research and drafting work of Ghent University faculty and students.
