SAR files amicus brief in support of plaintiffs in Cassandra Simon et al. v. Kay Ivey et al.

On December 19, 2025, SAR filed the following amicus brief to the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals in support of the plaintiffs in Cassandra Simon et al. v. Kay Ivey et al. challenging Senate Bill 129 (SB129).
The amicus brief argues that SB129—which limits classroom discussions and teachings on topics related to diversity, equity, and inclusion or other “divisive” topics in public universities—is misaligned with legal precedent on academic freedom and hinders academic excellence and knowledge production. The brief also draws on SAR’s expertise in international higher education, particularly in contexts such as Hungary, Nicaragua, China, and Russia, and warns about the dangers to democracy when academic freedom is curtailed.
