The online conference, marking the first anniversary of Prof. MT Hany Babu’s arrest, draws together leading researchers in the diverse fields of inquiry and reflection that Hany Babu has engaged with in his scholarly work in the generative linguistics program and in connecting its fundamental premises—of language as a structured, species-specific innate endowment—to social and political questions of the equality and equity for all languages. In his work, Babu has pursued a rational and open-minded critique of existing language policies within the Indian context that has contextualized the question of linguistic justice within a broader framework of inclusion along the axes of caste, gender, and community.
