Online Seminar: “When Silence Is Not Golden: The Costs of China’s Sanctions of European Researchers”
Monday, May 31 2021 3:00 pm
SAR-Ireland in conjunction with Prof. Alex Dukalskis (UCD) and Dr. Julia C. Schneider (UCC) would like to invite you to the following online webinar
“When Silence Is Not Golden: The Costs of China’s Sanctions of European Researchers”
Speakers:
Dr. Björn Jerdén (Swedish National China Centre),
Dr. Mareike Ohlberg (The German Marshall Fund of the United States),
Dr. Joanne Smith Finley (Newcastle University) and
Dr. Adrian Zenz (Victims of Communism Memorial Foundation).
In late March this year, the Chinese government announced two sets of counter-sanctions against several European academics and research institutions in retaliation for the coordinated sanctions from the EU, the UK, Canada, and the US against four Chinese officials and one entity in Xinjiang. Three of the speakers, Dr. Jerdén, Dr. Smith Finley and Dr. Zenz, are among the academics who have been personally sanctioned by the Chinese government. The Mercator Institute for Chinese Studies (MERICS), where Dr. Ohlberg was previously employed, has been one of the sanctioned institutions.
In the webinar “When Silence Is Not Golden”, the four speakers will discuss and explain how the latest sanctions affect their work and what consequences they experience and anticipate for their research. We will discuss with them and with the audience why and how the Chinese government has been using sanctions, in particular the denial of visas to researchers in China, as a “punishment” for many years.
