SAR U.S. South Regional Meeting
May 15–17, 2026 | National Humanities Center, Research Triangle, NC
In the midst of challenging times for higher education, Scholars at Risk (SAR) is convening members and partners across the U.S. South for a regional gathering focused on connection, collaboration, and collective action.
This meeting will bring together members of the SAR U.S. Section Steering Committee, SAR staff, and institutions from across the region to strengthen relationships, share experiences, and explore opportunities for deeper engagement within the SAR network.
Over the course of the weekend, participants will engage in conversations and working sessions focused on:
- Supporting and hosting scholars at risk
- Responding to pressures on academic freedom in the United States and globally
- Exploring engagement opportunities under SAR’s 25th anniversary theme, “Truth Matters”
- Sharing institutional initiatives, challenges, and areas for collaboration
- Identifying how SAR can better support members’ local and regional needs
The gathering will prioritize meaningful exchange and relationship-building, with ample time for informal conversation during shared meals and breaks. The program will also include a visit to the Duke Gardens, offering space for reflection and connection outside of formal sessions.
The meeting will begin on the evening of Friday, May 15 and conclude after lunch on Sunday, May 17 (with some flexibility depending on participant availability).
