SAR USA West Regional Meeting

Scholars at Risk and Pomona College in Claremont, California will host the first regional meeting of SAR Network members in the western United States.

10:00-10:30 am: Welcome & Opening Remarks

- Opening Remarks, Geoffrey Stone, University of Chicago
10:30-11:30 am: Introduction to Scholars at Risk & overview of opportunities
Location: Hahn Building Room 101
- Introduction to Scholars at Risk & explanation of SAR USA & regional sections
- Opportunities for involvement and cooperation for universities in the region
- Discussion of best practices for supporting threatened scholars, especially in light of recent crises resulting in high numbers of applications from Syria, Turkey, and elsewhere
11:30 am-12:30 pm: Responding to attacks on higher education communities
Location: Hahn Building Room 101
- Introduction to Scholars at Risk’s advocacy & monitoring work
- Discussion of Scholars at Risk’s responses to the widespread, disproportionate pressures on Turkey’s higher education sector, & opportunities for additional responses
- Involving students in hands-on advocacy
12:30-2:30 pm: Lunch and networking
Location: Hahn Building Foyer
2:30-4:30 pm: Free time for campus tours, individual meetings, etc.
- SAR staff will be available to answer questions throughout this time
4:30 pm: Keynote
Location: Bridges Hall of Music
