Wednesday, Mar 19 2025 8:30 am
On Wednesday, March 19, 2025 at 12:30PM EST, join SAR and the Global Coalition to Protect Education from Attack for an interactive & virtual panel on “Understanding the Gendered Dimensions of Attacks on Higher Education.” It will explore the range of gendered attacks on higher education, underscore the urgency of addressing them, and suggest concrete steps for taking action to prevent and respond to them.

From bans on women’s access to higher education in Afghanistan to crackdowns on the “Women, Life, Freedom” protests in Iran to legislative restrictions on teaching gender and sexuality in the United States and beyond, gendered attacks on higher education are varied, global, and all grave threats to the academic freedom of women, gender non-conforming, and queer students. Panelists will discuss the range of such gendered attacks on higher education around the world, while also providing meaningful insights into how the international community and academic freedom advocates can respond.
Speakers include Sarwerasa Rafizada, Distinguished Research Fellow at the UCLA Center for Near Eastern Studies; Laurie Nsiah-Jefferson Ph.D, MPH, MA, Director for the Center for Women in Politics and Public Policy at the University of Massachusetts, Boston, and Graduate Program Director for the Gender, Leadership and Public Policy graduate certificate program; and Lisa Chung Bender, Executive Director at the Global Coalition to Protect Education from Attack. Amy Kapit, Senior Advocacy Officer at SAR, will moderate the discussion.
This event is designed to be interactive. SAR encourages all participants to actively engage and come prepared with questions.
