Join the movement | SAR’s 25th anniversary year

Video: SAR’s 25th anniversary year launch at New York University in October 2025

Join us in marking Scholars at Risk’s 25th anniversary year (2025-2026) as we reflect on SAR’s achievements and celebrate what we have built together: a global academic freedom movement strong enough to meet the challenges ahead. Together, we have supported thousands of at-risk scholars, documented attacks on higher education in over 100 countries, and advocated for stronger protections for academic freedom worldwide. The anniversary theme, “Truth Matters,” is an opportunity to recommit to this work and the values behind it.

Submit a pledge

Submit a pledge for academic freedom in celebration of SAR’s 25th anniversary. We invite SAR network member institutions to participate by pledging one activity of their choosing that explores the theme of “Truth Matters” during the anniversary year. Activities might include a statement, essay, lecture, public talk, interview, workshop, or other event. Over 100 members in 25+ countries have already submitted a pledge in support of academic freedom – see all institutions involved and join the movement today.

Join the SAR network

The SAR network includes universities, academic associations, non-governmental organizations, and unions. SAR membership is open to accredited higher education institutions and educational associations worldwide. SAR members designate a SAR representative, establish a SAR committee within their institution, and contribute an annual membership subscription. Members are encouraged to participate in and promote activities across one or all of SAR’s three core programmatic areas: protectionadvocacy, and learning.
