On October 9, the University of Port Harcourt was closed following widespread student protests in a village near campus where four university students had been lynched and murdered earlier in the month. The student protesters reportedly set fire to 12 homes in the village and blocked traffic on a major local road. University officials closed the campus on that same day, stating that the purpose of the closure was to safeguard lives and property. The university remained closed until November 12.
