On November 12, 2014, a suicide bomber blew herself up just outside a library on the campus of the Federal College of Education in Katongora, Nigeria. As of this report, the number of casualties remains unclear, although most recent reports from local police indicate that two people, in addition to the bomber, died as a result of the blast.
Scholars at Risk is concerned about targeted attacks on educational institutions and students. In addition to the harm to the immediate victims, such incidents have a chilling effect on academic freedom and institutional autonomy. State officials have a responsibility to ensure the security of higher education communities, to prevent future attacks, and to hold perpetrators accountable.
