On June 9, 2018, an unidentified individual carried out a grenade attack against students studying in the Dilla University library, injuring at least nine. As of this report, little information is available regarding the motivation behind the attack, or the identity of the perpetrators. Authorities indicate that an investigation remains ongoing.

Scholars at RIsk is concerned about violent attacks on campus. In addition to the harm to the immediate victims, such incidents have a chilling effect on academic freedom and institutional autonomy. State officials have a responsibility to ensure the security of higher education communities, to prevent future attacks, and to hold perpetrators accountable.
