On January 11, 2022, a group of at least five hooded men entered an amphitheater on the campus of the Athens University of Economics and Business and attacked a professor as he gave a lecture, leading to his hospitalization.
Sources have not released information on the identity of the lecturer. An anarchist group claiming responsibility for the attack alleged that it was an effort to prevent the university or Ministry of Education from covering up the professor’s misdeeds – however, what those alleged misdeeds were is not clear from public reporting about the incident.
Scholars at Risk is concerned about targeted violence against a professor engaged in a lecture on campus. States and university authorities must take measures to ensure a safe university environment, including investigating acts of violence on campus and holding perpetrators accountable. In addition to harm to the immediate victim, violence against a scholar undermines academic freedom and democratic society generally.
