On May 31, 2022, alleged members of the Jubo League, a youth wing of Bangladesh’s Awami League (the ruling party), reportedly attacked two members of faction of the Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), also affiliated with the Awami League, at the University of Chittagong.
Few details of the attack are available, though sources indicate that it occurred as BCL activists Pradeep Chakraborty Durjoy, and Mohammad Rashed were arriving on campus by motorcycle. At least several Jubo League members attacked the three with unspecified weapons. Police apparently arrested at least one suspect.
Scholars at Risk is concerned by a violent attack on students in apparent connection with their affiliation with another student group. Students must refrain from violence, especially on campus, and respect the right to freedom of association and freedom of expression.
