On July 28, 2022, security forces assaulted medical students as they tried to enter the Elsheikh Abdallah Elbadri University (EAEU) campus to participate in a sit-in demonstration.
The medical students had staged the demonstration to ask EAEU to delay the graduation until students were able to complete their fifth level courses, after raising a number of academic concerns with university authorities. In response to the protest, security forces reportedly beat students with batons, preventing them from entering EAEU.
On July 31, EAEU ordered the indefinite closure of the university to maintain the safety of students and university staff.
Scholars at Risk is concerned by the use of force against students in an apparent attempt to restrict the nonviolent exercise of the rights to freedom of expression and freedom of assembly — conduct that is expressly protected by international human rights instruments including the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights. Security forces have an obligation to refrain from restricting nonviolent expressive activity. In addition to the harm to the immediate victims, the use of force against students undermines academic freedom and democratic society generally.
