On October 17, 2022, Israeli soldiers reportedly clashed with and fired tear gas and stun grenades at students at the entrance to the Al-Aroub campus of the Palestine Technical University – Kadoorie.
Al Quds News reported that soldiers detained an unspecified number of students; however, SAR has not obtained additional reporting to corroborate this. The same source also reported that some youths had allegedly thrown stones at settler-owned vehicles at the Etzion junction roughly around the time soldiers surrounded the university; however, it is unclear whether this is what the soldiers were responding to.
Scholars at Risk is concerned about armed forces using tear gas and stun grenades against higher education students. Armed groups must refrain from the disproportionate use of force and ensure that their actions do not endanger civilians. Absent a compelling reason to do so, such against undermine institutional autonomy and democratic society generally.
