On December 8, 2022, gunmen from the Shabwah Defense Forces forcibly abducted at least two students at Shabwah University’s College of Oils and Minerals in Ataq city.

The gunmen reportedly stormed the university’s lecture halls and dormitories and damaged university property. The abducted students were taken to an unknown location.

Scholars at Risk is concerned about a raid of a university and the abduction of students by armed individuals. Parties to a conflict have an obligation to refrain from encroaching on institutional autonomy or physical violence against noncombatants, including members of higher education communities. In addition to the harm to the immediate victims, such attacks undermine academic freedom, institutional autonomy, and democratic society generally.
