On January 9, 2023 unidentified men attacked Samson Akinbamide Adegoke, the acting rector of Osun State College of Technology.
Adegoke was reportedly leaving his office by car when the assailants, in a different vehicle, opened fire on his vehicle just a few miles from the main campus gates. Adegoke’s driver managed to keep driving and escape.
As of this report, authorities do not appear to have identified the suspects behind the attack.
Scholars at Risk is concerned about an apparently targeted attack on a scholar. State authorities should take all reasonable steps to prevent and respond to such attacks, including by holding perpetrators accountable, in accordance with international human rights standards. In addition to the harm to the immediate victim, violent, targeted attacks on scholars undermine academic freedom and democratic society generally.
