On January 27, 2023, it was reported that María Rodríguez, a professor at Metropolitan University, had been temporarily detained by state authorities after meeting with UN officials.
Rodriguez was returning to the Metropolitan University campus after attending a meeting held by UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volter Türk with members of civil society organizations, when authorities from the Scientific, Criminal and Criminal Investigation Corps took her into custody. She was released after a few hours. The justification for the detention is not immediately clear from available reporting.
Scholars at Risk is concerned about the arbitrary detention of a scholar, apparently in connection with the nonviolent exercise of the right to freedom of expression and association, conduct which is expressly protected under international human rights instruments including the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, to which Venezuela is a party.
