On February 15, 2023, a small explosive device was detonated in a bathroom on the campus of the University of Antioquia in Medellin, injuring two people.

The explosion occurred amid ongoing protests around the University of Antioquia campus. According to reports, one of the injured individuals had been under house arrest in connection with an alleged act of terrorism; reports suggested that he was preparing the device when it exploded in his hands.

Scholars at Risk is concerned about violence on campus. State and university authorities must take reasonable measures to ensure safe campus conditions for students, and protesters must refrain from violence. In addition to the harm to the immediate victims, violent attacks on campus undermine academic freedom and democratic society generally.
