On November 16, 2023, Israeli forces stormed and raided Palestine Technical University, Kadoorie (PTUK) in the West Bank, causing damage to university infrastructure.

According to PTUK and the Palestinian Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Israeli forces vandalized the engineering building and confiscated network devices.

The raid took place a month after Hamas attacked Israel on October 7, 2023; an attack during which over 1,200 Israelis and foreign nationals were killed and more than 200 abducted. As of early- February 2024, the Israeli military’s subsequent bombardment of the Gaza Strip has reportedly killed more than 27,000 Palestinians.

Scholars at Risk is concerned about the forced entry into a higher education institution by military forces. While security forces have a responsibility to maintain security and safety, they must also refrain from the disproportionate use of force and ensure that their actions do not endanger civilians. Absent a compelling reason to do so, campus raids undermine academic freedom, institutional autonomy, and democratic society generally.
