On February 7, 2024, the Iran Student Guilds Council announced on its Telegram channel that Soore University in Tehran had suspended at least five students from attending classes.
Soore University’s cultural vice-chancellor summoned the students to receive their suspension orders, reportedly without providing them the opportunity for disciplinary committee hearings or following legal procedures.
The suspensions were reported in the context of an ongoing crackdown on student activists at Iranian universities, including widespread summonses issued by intelligence and security agencies, disciplinary actions, temporary suspensions, and even expulsions of students and faculty members.
Scholars at Risk is concerned by a university arbitrarily disciplining students for their apparent support of a protest movement. Higher education authorities should refrain from such disciplinary actions and respect students’ exercise of the rights to freedom of expression and freedom of assembly. In addition to the harm to the immediate victims, disciplinary actions intended to deter or punish organized student expression undermine academic freedom and democratic society in general.
