On February 23, 2024, unidentified attackers threw a grenade inside the office of the All Manipur Students’ Union (AMSU) located at Dhanamanjuri University (DM University).

The attack occurred at night and two AMSU members, Salam Michael and Oinam Kenedy, were rushed to the hospital with injuries. Kenedy later died from his injuries.

At the time of reporting, police have not identified a motive, however the attack comes after inter-communal clashes in the northeastern state of Manipur. The clashes relate to protests against the majority Meitei community’s inclusion in the scheduled tribes category. Violence erupted between the two groups after a rally by the All Tribal Students Union of Manipur (ATSUM) on May 3, 2023.

Scholars at Risk is concerned about a violent attack against a student organization. State authorities should take steps to prevent and respond to such attacks, including by carrying out investigations and holding perpetrators accountable, in accordance with international human rights standards.
