On February 26, 2024, members of the Kachin Independence Army, the Chin National Front, and the local People’s Defense Force (PDF) – affiliated with the opposition’s National Unity Government – attacked Myanmar military junta troops on the campus of Kalay University.

Myanmar’s military has held strategic positions on the university’s campus since the 2021 military coup. During the attack, PDF forces evacuated around 150 students and education staff. According to one PDF member, some students and staff were questioned before their evacuation.

Scholars at Risk is concerned about armed activity around and military occupation of a higher education institution’s campus. State and non-state armed groups have a responsibility to refrain from occupying, using, or attacking higher education institutions, among other civilian objects.
