On March 5, 2024, the disciplinary committee of the Iran University of Science and Technology in Tehran suspended 11 students for three semesters allegedly attending a mixed gender party.

Morality police reportedly summoned some of the students. The disciplinary committee required others to sign an undertaking stating that they would not violate moral standards.

Scholars at Risk is concerned by a university arbitrarily suspending students for exercising their freedom of assembly. Higher education authorities should refrain from such disciplinary actions and respect students’ exercise of such rights. In addition to the harm to the immediate victims, disciplinary actions intended to deter or punish organized student expression undermine academic freedom and democratic society generally.
