On November 13, 2024, police used batons to forcibly disperse students associated with the Panjab University Bachao Morcha, a student activist organization, as they were protesting against the delay of university senate union elections at Panjab University (PU). At least 5 students were injured.
Students originally planned to confront the PU Vice Chancellor Professor Renu Vig after marching from the Student Center to the VC’s office. After observing that the path to the VC’s office had been barricaded, students redirected their protest towards the Law Auditorium where “Punjab Vision: 2047,” a conference on the future economic agenda of the Punjab region, was being held. In response, police used batons to beat and divert student protesters away from the auditorium, injuring at least 5 students.
Scholars at Risk is concerned about the use of force during a student protest. While state authorities have the responsibility to maintain order and prevent disruption, they must refrain from the disproportionate use of force and endangerment of civilians and must respect the right to freedom of association and freedom of expression. Students and members of the public must refrain from violence, especially on campus, and also respect the right to freedom of association and freedom of expression. Such actions, beyond harming the immediate victims, have a chilling effect on academic freedom.
