On June 6, 2025, a group of unidentified individuals clashed with police at the University of Antioquia.
During the incident, nearly 40 masked individuals positioned themselves inside the campus gates and threw homemade explosives at the police. Police responded with tear gas. According to media reports, the unidentified individuals were associated with the university. The university suspended all campus activities for the remainder of the day.
Scholars at Risk is concerned about violent and destructive attacks on campus. Students and members of the public must refrain from violence, especially on campus, and respect the right to freedom of association and freedom of expression, and university authorities must take reasonable measures to ensure safe conditions for living, learning, and expression for students. In addition to the harm to the immediate victims, such actions undermine academic freedom and democratic society generally.
