On July 4, 2025, an individual claiming to belong to Man of Korea, a men’s rights group, sent a bomb threat to Sungshin Women’s University, prompting the university to suspend all summer session classes and vacate the campus.
The threat, which was emailed to the Center for Teaching and Learning Support on the evening of Friday, July 4, read: “I really hate women — I planted 10 kilograms [22 pounds] of dynamite at the university…It will explode at 3:34 p.m. and kill many women. Women don’t need academics. Power to the voiceless.”
The following Monday morning, a staff member reported the threat to university administrators, who notified Seongbuk Police, cancelled all classes, and ordered campus to evacuate. A SWAT team conducted a search of campus grounds and, later that afternoon, confirmed that no explosives were present. At the time of writing, police had not found the perpetrator.
Scholars at Risk is concerned about gender-based threats aimed at intimidating members of higher education community. Such actions undermine academic freedom and university autonomy while severely disrupting campus life. State and university authorities should take reasonable steps to respond to and prevent such attacks, including by investigating and holding perpetrators accountable.
