On November 17, 2025, four universities in Iloilo received bomb threats.
West Visayas State University (WVSU) Main, WVSU Calinog, Iloilo Science and Technology University La Paz, and Hua Siong College of Iloilo all received threats nearly simultaneously via comments or messages from anonymous Facebook accounts.
Each campus suspended classes and evacuated students, staff, and faculty. Authorities investigated each campus and found no evidence of explosives. The similarity in timing, structure, and method suggested the incidents were connected beyond an escalating pattern of bomb threats targeting universities across the Philippines from August to December 2025. The threats coincided with student-led anti-corruption protests and appeared to be intended to chill free expression.
Scholars at Risk is concerned about threats aimed at intimidating the high education community and disrupting classes and campus life. Such actions undermine academic freedom and university autonomy. State and university authorities should take reasonable steps to respond to and prevent such attacks, including by investigating and holding perpetrators accountable.
