On November 21, 2025, private security forces hired by Anadolu University scuffled with students demonstrating outside of the university’s cafeteria and forcibly removed them from campus.
The students had gathered to make a statement protesting the university cafeteria’s reservation system and to condemn the university’s Special Security Unit (ÖGB)’s response—which they called an attack—to previous demonstrations demanding “students’ right to food.” ÖGB intervened, prompting a scuffle, and and forcibly removed the students from campus.
Scholars at Risk is concerned about the use of force during a student protest. While university security forces have the responsibility to maintain order and prevent disruption, they must refrain from the disproportionate use of force and endangerment of civilians and must respect the right to freedom of association and freedom of expression. Students and members of the public must refrain from violence, especially on campus, and also respect the right to freedom of association and freedom of expression. Such actions, beyond harming the immediate victims, have a chilling effect on academic freedom.
