On January 18, 2025, Jordan Vito, a student at the University of Indonesia (UI), received a series of threatening packages following his participation in the university’s general elections.
In total, Vito received five packages containing intimidating items, including a shroud and a keris (a traditional Javanese dagger). Additionally, he reported attempted breaches of his personal social media accounts. Despite reporting these incidents to both state and university authorities, Vito received no official protection, even after asserting that the threats were direct retaliation for his role in the student elections.
Other students reportedly faced similar threats related to student electoral processes in Indonesia (see report).
Scholars at Risk is concerned about the intimidation and harassment, including threats of violence, of students for exercising their freedom of expression – conduct which is protected by international human rights instruments, including the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights. Members of the public must refrain from actions that chill or restrict such conduct. In addition to harm to the immediate victims, intimidation and harassment in response to peaceful expressive activity undermine academic freedom and democratic society generally.
