On March 23, 2026, security forces clashed with students protesting mismanagement at Laikipia University, injuring six students and killing one.
Students were protesting the lack of access to university emergency services following a hiking accident. Alleging poor management by the university administration, the students blocked the road outside the campus. Security forces and anti-riot police dispersed the demonstrators, using escalating force, including live bullets. During the clash, security forces shot several students, killing a first-year education student. Six students were hospitalized for their injuries.
The university suspended operations indefinitely.
Scholars at Risk is concerned about the use of lethal force during a student protest. Scholars at Risk is concerned by killing of a student, and offers its condolences to the victim’s family, friends, and the university community. While state authorities have the responsibility to maintain order and prevent disruption, they must refrain from the disproportionate use of force and endangerment of civilians and must respect the right to freedom of association and freedom of expression. Such actions, beyond harming the immediate victims, have a chilling effect on academic freedom.
