SAR Canada stands in solidarity with Cihan Erdal, a permanent resident of Canada and Ph.D. Candidate at Carleton University, who was detained by Turkish officials on Friday, September 25, 2020. We deplore any action that seeks to silence freedom of speech and subvert academic freedom.  We urge the academic community to muster all the support they can for Cihan by spreading the word of his detention and to vigorously demand his release. We call on the Government of Canada and the relevant Turkish authorities to take urgent action to secure Cihan’s immediate release and safe return to Canada.
