The Scholars at Risk Italy section was launched at the University of Padova on February 19, 2019.
SAR Italy is a partnership between Italian higher education institutions and research centres and SAR,
an international network of higher education institutions aimed at fostering the promotion of
academic freedom and protecting the fundamental rights of scholars across the world.
In constituting SAR Italy, the governance structures of adhering institutions, as well as researchers,
educators, students and administrative personnel send a strong message of solidarity to scholars and
institutions that experience situations whereby their academic freedom is at stake, and their research,
educational and ‘third mission’ activities are constrained.
Coming together in SAR Italy, the adhering institutions commit to concretely contributing to the
promotion and protection of academic freedom, alongside over 500 other higher education
institutions in 40 countries in the world.

In March 2020 the Advocacy Seminar at the University of Padova began with the participation of 15 students from the Master’s degree course European and Global Studies. The seminar is an elective in the degree course and students who complete the seminar will be awarded 6 ECTS. This is the second Advocacy Seminar run by a SAR-Italy member, the first was run in Trento in 2019.Read More

Twelve universities and research institutions in Italy that are members of the network Scholars at Risk signed a petition on 19th March in support of Patrick George Zaki, the Egyptian student enrolled in a Master's programme at the University of Bologna, currently detained in Egypt. A strong message of solidarity has thus been launched to Patrick George Zaki and his family, calling on the Egyptian authorities for his unconditional release.Read More
