Call on China to halt execution of renowned scholar Dr. Tashpolat Tiyip
Posted January 6, 2020
On August 13, 2019, SAR wrote to Chinese officials urging them to immediately halt the execution of Dr. Tashpolat Tiyip, a renowned scholar of geography and former president of Xinjiang University (XJU).
Dr. Tiyip disappeared in March 2017 after he was removed from his position at XJU without explanation. He was later sentenced to death on a charge of “separatism” in a secret trial. Sources now indicate this sentence may soon be carried out as the expiration of its two-year reprieve approaches.
